Get the Most Out of Your Training Seminars

This in turn has an effect on the bottom line, which is why training seminars are seen as a critical part of any business’ continued success. Putting a training seminar on is not that difficult but optimizing it can be challenging. You need to get the right level of staff engagement, create a learning environment and keep the whole thing focused on your desired goals. None of this is easy. This short post brings you some simple tips to get the most from your training seminars.

Logical Location

An important first step is to establish the best location for your training seminar. For larger businesses, with multiple locations – and hence transport issues – this is particularly important. Logic dictates you need a central location that is an appropriate venue. At the same time, you need to consider how long your seminar is going to be. This will allow you to take into account accommodation requirements.

It may be tempting to just put the seminar on at your business’s location. If you go down this road, you’ll have to contend with all the accompanying distractions. Similarly, an option is to dispatch instructors to each of your staff locations. This also has drawbacks: you’ll lose engagement on the staff side and possibly enthusiasm on the instructors – who must endlessly complete the same training.

Purposeful Programming

The contents of the seminar may take a considerable time to put together. This should not discourage you from sending out information early, so your staff can plan for the seminar. You should follow the simple rules of programming – the more important aspects in the morning, frequent breaks and the least important aspect straight after a (light) lunch. Importantly, allow enough time for questions and discussion – 4:1 is a good ration of presentation to question time.


You must focus the day’s activities. The best way to do this is to have the boss say, at the start of the day: “you are here today to achieve x”. If this is not practical, you must find a way to ensure that all attendees know what it is they’re expected to achieve and give them an incentive to do it.


Many people are visual learners – they learn and engage by seeing what it is they should be doing. For this reason PowerPoint and visual aids need to be optimized. You need to engage your people’s visual imagination, as well as simply speaking to them.


Participating attendees are engaged and most likely learning. Sometimes, people need to be convinced before they change their behavior or do something new – this is why you’ll find questions important. It’s also normally the case that, if one person asks a question, more are thinking it. Participation can take some encouragement, maybe plant a few ‘first questions’ or consider breaking the ice at larger events. Microphones and screens can help at really large seminars.
