Health Watch: What You Need to Know About Flying During a Health Scare

You Can Be Denied Boarding

If you have a fever or other visible signs of illness — regardless of what the illness is — you may not be allowed to board the plane. This means a couple of things. One, you shouldn’t be taking any business trips if you have a cold, even if it’s important. Two, you need to be especially cautious of your health while you’re actually on the business trip, or you might not be able to fly back!

Allergies Can Be Confused for Illness

Do you often get hayfever? Running nose, red eyes, sneezing? Allergies can easily be confused for an illness; in fact, some allergies can even lead to a slight fever. If you do have allergies, it’s imperative that you get medication for it before flying. Otherwise you could end up being denied for a flight even if you aren’t sick at all!

Be Cautious if You Have Any Bruising

In addition to fever and other flu-like symptoms, Ebola also tends to occur with unusual bleeding or bruising. So, if you have any visible or large bruises, whatever they are from, you should be prepared to explain to officials exactly how you got them.

Where You’re Coming From Matters

If you’re simply flying from one city to another, you’re not likely to get stopped. But if you’re flying in from international waters, it’s more likely that any illness will be considered more seriously — and this is true even if you’re flying from the United States to somewhere else. So, if you’re on an international flight, you should be even more cautious about your health.

While these rules are intended to only stop those with a serious disease, there is no way for officials to tell whether you have a serious disease without stopping you and investigating. This also means that you might be delayed if you have any signs of illness, even if it’s just a light cold. Keep this in mind for your planning! If you are denied a flight for health concerns, you should be able to either get a refund of the flight or book again — but you’ll need to be completely well by then, of course.
