How To Know If Your Venue Really is Green

However, if you must choose a potential venue and you really want somewhere green, you’re going to need to be able to spot who is exaggerating and who is really green.

Efficiency

A green venue is one that looks to minimize energy consumption. You may be able to spot this by looking at things like light bulbs, motion sensors to trigger lights and how room temperatures are monitored. You should also be able to spot venues that have put in energy saving measures like insulation and double glazing. In the bathrooms, you’ll maybe see efficient hair dryers and flow control options on the toilets.

Recycle vs Reuse

Making sure things that can no longer be used do not simply clutter up the environment is something that most venues will tell you they are doing. However, this is not always the best option. Look for venues that will reuse things from previous events; this also can be a sign that they have quality items that can be used more than once. For everything else you should ask about how they recycle, rather than, do they recycle. For example, do they make it easy for guests to drop off paper and plastics, or does all waste get collected by the maid and thrown away.

The bottle test

A simple way of find out if the venue has considered reuse rather than recycling is to ask them how they would provide water. If they say: with glass jugs and glasses they’re on the right track. If however, they say: with bottles, then you know they’re not giving the issue a great deal of thought.
