Travel Hot Spots in the U.S. - Where to Go and Where to Avoid

Summertime means a time to make incredible memories with loved ones. Consider traveling to a U.S. destination you've never been to before. Each hotspot on this list is increasing in popularity for different reasons. Whether you're craving art scenes, culture, cuisine, or nightlife, there's something on this list for everyone.

While you're at it, here are some locations you'll want to avoid in the U.S. You should plan your trip in some of these hidden gems, because you may fall in love with all or some of these locations.

Travel: Asheville, NC

Asheville is known for its incredible architecture, buzzing art scene, historic locations, and mountain scenery. It's become one of the best travel spots for summer 2019. If you love drinking craft beer then you'll enjoy the Small-Group Downtown Brewery Walking Tour, which gives you an inside look at three local breweries. For a wild night on the town, check out the Asheville Ghost Walking Tour which is filled with haunted historical stories and an exclusive look at the Asheville Mystery Museum.

Travel: Baltimore, MD

Baltimore has become one of the most popular hotspots for foodies and history buffs alike. The Fells Point Food Tour makes it easier to decide where to eat. You'll also see some of Baltimore's historical sights along the way, including iconic televisions, shows on the History & Culture Tour. The Baltimore Inner Harbor Sightseeing Tour gives you a new perspective on this quaint-looking city.

Travel: Portland, ME

Portland has a combination of beautiful scenery, bustling culture, and delicious cuisine. New Englanders love having beer and lobster, and Portland shows no shortage of either. Book a Friday Evening Brewery Tour or a Portland Brewery Brunch Tour to try some of the local craft beers for a low price.

Nature lovers will love taking a ferry ride to the Casco Bay Islands or the Diamond Cove. You can also visit during Restaurant Week, which takes place in the first two weeks of March, so book your trip as soon as possible so you can take advantage of some of the most delicious food this city has to offer.

Travel: Santa FE, NM

This city is also known for its art scene, cultural attractions, and world-renowned cuisine. It has one of the best art scenes in the U.S. The Artists in Residence gives you an up-close look at some of the local artists as you watch them create jewelry, paintings, and pottery. You can also embark on a Taste of Canyon Road Food Tour as you eat and drink your way around the city. If you're more into nature, then you'll want to hike up Atalaya Mountain Trail or take a nature walk through Hyde Park Memorial State Park.

Avoid: Anchorage, AK

This city is dark most of the time, which makes it hard to explore. It's also known for its cold temperatures and high crime rate. Due to an oil spill from an oil tanker owned by Exxon several years ago, many of Anchorage's beaches are basically oil slicks. If you're interested in traveling to Alaska, Denali National Park is a beautiful and scenic area that's safer to roam around.

Avoid: Chicago, IL

This may sound shocking to some people, but it has ended up on the list of the least popular US cities to visit. It's the third most populated city in the US, which also has the highest crime rate. Chicago also has a high unemployment rate and plenty of foreclosures. While it may be the perfect place to visit, you definitely don't want to move there. It does have an exciting and diverse nightlife that extends over 29 miles of lakefront including a 15-mile public beach.

Avoid: Lubbock, TX

Lubbock is the perfect place for business travelers but is awful for individuals and families. It doesn't have much to offer when it comes to attractions and entertainment. It may be one of the most boring cities in the U.S. It has a very limited arts and culture scene, with some of its music venues closing on a regular basis. It also has little dining options. However, Lubbock does have a bustling nightlife. So, if you're looking to party all the time, then Lubbock may be for you.

Avoid: Poughkeepsie, NY

Poughkeepsie is known for its terrible economy and horrible weather. The sun is only out 165 days of the year, compared to the national average of 205. It's also dismal when it comes to its variety in terms of art, culture, and other activities. If you're interested in doing nothing on your trip, then Poughkeepsie is ideal. New York has plenty of exciting alternatives. New York is a fascinating city that will blow you away with its arts, food, fashion, energy, and nightlife.
